Abstrak / Ringkasan / Sinopsis
This book examines the complex interplay, at the local level, of politics and development processes in Malaysia, as manifested in the community Kampung Chempaka. It is based on a 2-year field study of the community, which combined methodologies of anthropology and history. After a detailed ethnographic account of the history of the community the book outlines the differences in the national policies related to rural development before and after independence (1969), to examine the consequences of their implementation on the livelyhood of the villagers and the village social divisions. This is followed by a historical examination of the political system and the party politics in the village and the role of the party and patronage politics in the distribution of development projects. The concluding chapter draws together the complex interplay of the various disparate issues.
