The book deals with the various circumstances leading to the subversion of the government of Kedah and subjugation of minor states by the Siamese and whether the British government should interfere to protect its interest in Penang and British settlements in the Straits of Malacca. There are also accounts of the tin mining areas on the west coast of the Malayan Peninsula and the nature of trade, produce and port charges between Penang and the states on the east coast of Sumatra. The appendix lists full text of treaties, official letters and memorandums.
